Because of Isaac G. Pollards position with the Methodist Church, I was able to track my GGrandad to PA. I'm sure that Isaac H. and my GGrandad left with him or shortly after as my Grandads oldest brother was born 1885 in PA, and I assume my Ggrandad who was in PA by 1884 met my GGrandmother and had their first child by 1885. This info I am sending will explain how and why they came to be in PA by 1884. I have never sent this to anyone because of its sensitive nature and have kept it in my records only. Please use some discretion with this info. I have quite a bit of information still in paper form that was never added simply because I finally burnt out.

I would like to locate Isaac G. Pollard’s sister Lockey F. Pollard, my Ggrandad’s half sister. This would finish the Pollard children for me. Some of this info came from a descendent of my GGrandmothers sister in PA, The Methodist Church, and a person working on Johnsons. I also sent for documents from UW Arkansas and Arkansas Historical Society and used the UW Historical Society Archives. They have an excellent library and archives, this is where I located the boat name and passenger list for my dad’s mother. They also had a book published 1890 for my GGrandmothers family, Jesse C. Johnson’s wife. I hope some of this will help you extend your family history and if you have any questions feel free to e-mail. I would appreciate you not using my name and address as I am leaving this to some one else to finish in the future if they are interested.

Officially founded in 1877, Philander Smith College is the result of one of the early attempts to make education available to freedman (former slaves) west of the Mississippi River. The forerunner of the college was Walden Seminary, named in honor of Dr., J.M. Walden, one of the originators and the first corresponding Secretary of the Freedmans Aid Society. Miss Helen Perkins served as Principal of the institution during the early years.

The Seminary was located at Eighth Street and Broadway in the Wesley Chapel Methodist Church. The first Conference Trustees of the new school, elected in 1878 were: Ministers I.G.Pollard, W.O.Emory, G.W. Sams, W.H. Crawford, A.J. Phillips, L.W. Elkins, and Laymen A.L. Richmond, William Laporte, and Frank Carland.

Philander Smith was chartered as a four year college on March 13, 1883. I.G. Pollard was shown as one of the trustees at this time along with others. Note: This info from Archives in Utah

Ed was a religious man. He united with the Fairview Methodist Church in June, 1877, when he was not yet 13 yrs old. He was also baptized that same month with 18 others at Wallaceville, undoubtedly at the creek. In 1884 he experienced a rebirth of communion with his church when Rev I.G. Pollard conducted special meetings over his charge at which many people experience conversion.

I found Issac G. and Elizabeth’s marriage in Little Rock; also Lillian on the 1900 census born Nov 1883 in Butler Co.

I am wondering if Lillian was born in Little Rock or Butler. If she was born in Butler, the year/date is wrong. Guess I can ask Little Rock if they have a birth record for her.

In the fall of 1883, Conference of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Oct 3rd, to a question who are received by transfer?

Answer: Isaac G. Pollard from Little Rock Conference

Another question: have any been located at own request?

Answer, Isaac G. Pollard (locater means get out of the Methodist Episcopal Church South).

I found the letter from the man that asked if I had any copies of any of Isaac G's sermons. His name is H.W. Strawbridge, R.5, Titusville, PA. I received this letter 1984. He sent a copy of the article that appeared in the paper stating Rev Issac G. Pollard, the Vitrant pastor of the Stinsville M.E. Charge of Churches of which the Fairview Church was a part. Fairview Church was where the funeral of Fletcher Alcorn was held 18-may-1884, claimed 1000 people attended this funeral, all could not get into this small church.

Elizabeth was under age. Her mother Mrs Francis Dillahay's consent to the marriage was included in the record.

In a publication called Pulaski County Historical Review, Vol 44 Num 2 Published Summer 1996, was an artical entitled Interracial Marriages and Cohabitation in Pulaski Co, ARK 1870-1900, by Kelley Metheny. On page 35-36 while discussing interracial marriages, the following passage appeared.

Little Rock claimed center stage for another scandal that highlighted views and concerns of both races. The Reverend Isaac G. Pollard a prominent minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, wed a sixteen year old mullato girl in November 1883. After the ceremony they left for Memphis, and authorities did not discover until later that the girl’s mother and Justice Chamberlin, who performed the ceremony in ignorance of the girls race, expressed opposition to the union. In contrast a black gentleman who knew the couple approved of the marriage and hoped it would set a precedent for personal freedom when choosing a spouse or even a friend.

To deny there were outbreaks of violence against mixed couples elsewhere in the state is to ignore the facts, but they were not representative of the entire society and occurred less frequently than many suppose. (Taken from the Arkansas Gazette 6-nov-1883 and 7-nov-1883, and Miscegenation file, Tom Dillard).

Note: In 1908 Isaac G. Pollard enquired of the status of Herod P. Johnson’s Pension Status from Butler Co, PA. This is included in Herod Johnson’s Pension Papers from his service during Civil War.

Isaac G. asked to get out of the Methodist Conference just before the divorce was final. He married Elizabeth A. Dillahay in 1883 in Little Rock ARK, and left.

Somewhere in my records I have a letter from an historian stating Isaac G. preached the largest attended funeral held in this town (I can't remember the name of this town). This historian wanted to know if I had copies of any of his sermons, which I do not. This leads me to think he located in another place in Pennsylvania before going to Butler, PA. 19-mar-2000.

I believe Isaac G., located in Hammond IN., before going on to Chicago where he died 1926. Some of the children may have stayed in IN.

Howard Strawbridge died very suddenly about 5 years ago. It is my understanding that all of his records were given to the Vennango County Historical Society, 301 S. Park St., P.O. Box 101, Franklin, PA. 16323

I am very familiar with the Fairview Church. Unfortunately it was torn down in the early 1960's. I am not aware that there were any records regarding it. There is a cemetery across the road from where it used to be. Would you like me to check if a Fletcher Alcorn is buried there?. Alcorn was a relatively common name in Vennango County. I think Stinsville should be Sunville. The Church still stands although I am not sure if it is still in use. At one time Sunville was a bustling community but that was a long time ago. Sunville used to have a high school academy, I think the last graduating class was in the early 1940's. If anyone had any records of the Sunville Church, it would have been Howard Strawbridge. Sunville also has a cemetery. I.G. Pollard was the minister of the Sunville Church for only one year, 1884.

The Fairview Church is in Cherrytree Township, Vennango Co, which immediately south of Titusville. The Sunville Church is in Plum Township, Vennango Co, approximately 5 miles south of Chapmanville. Both of these townships are in the northern part of the county and are not far from Titusville which is in Crawford County. Franklin is the county seat for Vennango County and Rockland Township is south of there almost bordering Butler Co. Meadville is the county seat of Crawford Co.

I have a map of the Fairview Cemetery. I found where Fletcher Alcorn is buried. He was born in 1840 and died in 1884. There is only one other burial in the same plot as Fletcher. This is for an infant, Floyde Alcorn, 1874. There are numerous Alcorns in this cemetery and other cemeteries scattered through the countryside.

I found the info you asked for.

In the University of Missouri, Columbus Missouri I find Isaac G. Pollard was admitted to the St Louis Conference in 1870 and was sent to Huntsville County Carrollton, Carroll County Missouri on trial and in 1871 was appointed to Marshall, Saline County Missouri to preach.

Note: No Huntsville Co, MO.

On 18-feb-1874 the Arkansas Conference was held at Batesville, Independence County Arkansas and appointed him to Pocantag, Randolph County, Arkansas according to Bishop Lawrence, and Professor Emorug Central Methodist College and U.S. Colonel retired Fayette Missouri. The 1876-77-78 session of Little Rock held at Fayetteville, Fort Smith, Arkansas.

The 1879 session of Little Rock Conference appointed him presiding Elder of White River District P.O. Jacksonport, Arkansas.

Feb 8-11 1883 Spring Conference session appointed him presiding Elder of Little Rock District.

Rick

I do have a death certificate from Cook County, Illinois. It doesn't give his father or mother's name just his wife Elizabeth A. Dillahay. Mrs Lillian Houseman gave the information.

Note: I had all this info and because Isaac G was not a direct line I did not send for DC.

Tim

I am sending this along because it pertains to Isaac G. Pollard and my Ggrandad’s mother Mary Gilstrap Pollard Johnson. This indicates that she died in Little Rock as she and others were still on the street directory 1881. It would be interesting to determine when this directory was done as it would help zero in on when she actually died, if this note is accurate.

One other thing if you notice on the 1850/60 Census: Mary named her children according to a formula that was used back then. I hope I have this correct but I believe this is right:

In my Grandad’s memoirs that he wrote about his life growing up in PA and elsewhere, he mentioned his Grandad Herod and his wife's name was Mary and he thought that she was of Spanish Descent. I found this interesting because she named my GGrandad Jesse Columbus Cicero Halliburton Johnson so these names had some significance to her.

Anyone that could have possibly explained this to me has long since passed away, and all of my grandad’s papers were thrown out after he died long before I started on this. I do have some Davis info that pertains to Lockey Davis Gilstrap’s family, Mary Gilstrap Pollard’s mother if you’re interested. I did not follow up on this.
