When Duffy Became Duffie

Created By: Tim Duffie

Date 11/12/07: based on an e-mail received 11/11/07, it appears that my conjecture regarding Patrick Duffy arriving in 1849 was wrong. I received the following from Greg Coombs, a descendant of Jerome & Ann E. Williams Duffy:

Hi Timothy,

I am also descended from Patrick Duffy (1787 - Nov 15, 1839) and Mary (Margaret) McNally (1796 - Oct 15, 1848). I have completed a great deal of research on the Duffy and McNally families and would love to share information. I am the grandson of Margaret Catherine Duffy (1922 - 1972). Her parents were James Francis Duffy (1880 - 1977) and Mary Eleanor Purtill (Ella May) (1882 - 1937). James' parents were Jerome Duffy (1858 - 1928) and Ann Elizabeth Williams (1855 - 1905). Jerome's parents were Patrick Jr. Duffy (1829 - 1885) and Armina Collins (1832 - 1909). Patrick was the son of Patrick Sr. Duffy and Mary McNally. Mary's is descended from Owen McNally and Catherine McCadum. Patrick and Mary Duffy had 7 children: Sarah Duffy m. Edward O'Connor, James Duffy m. Mary Kelly, Patrick Duffy m. Armina Collins, Francis Duffy m. Adeline B. Cramer, John Duffy m. Mary O'Neill, Owen Duffy, and Peter W. Duffy m. Emma A. Topliff. I have followed all of these lines, including the Collins line (Israel and Lovina had 8 children).

The Duffy family came from Co. Monaghan, Ireland to Ontario, Canada via Quebec abt. 1835. They settled in Oxford Co.

You have the headstone of William Patrick Duffy on your website. He is the son of Jerome Duffy and Ann E. Williams. He is my great grandfather's brother. He is James Monroe's nephew.

Lucinda B. Campbell is buried Oct 7, 1909 in the Ingersoll Rural Cemetery, Oxford Co. Patrick Jr. Duffy is buried in St. Peter's RC Cemetery in North Norwich. Almost every person buried there is related to the Duffy/McNally clan. The McNally brother donated the land. Armina Collins died in Brantford and is probably buried there, but I have been unable to locate a record of that yet. James Monroe Duffy and Harriet Allen are both buried in Mt. Elgin Cemetery. The names is transcribed Duffy.

Please feel free to contact me if you like as I have much more info to share.

Greg Coombs

Greg also sent copies of the "Commemorative Biographical Record" of Francis Duffy which provides a complete listing of the familly of Patrick & Margaret McNally Duffy:

This is the most concise and detailed history of our family that I have seen to date.

Date 10/08/07: this was a highly informative e-mail that helped considerably identify the proper Patrick Duffy family:

Hi Tim Duffie,

Congratulations on all of the work you've done on the Duffy family.

I've spent more than a few hours looking into the Duffy's of Oxford County, Ontario. You might be interested in some references relating to Patrick Duffy, father of James Munroe Duffy and of my great-grandfather Jerome Duffy.

I am James Christopher (Chris) Peppler. My father, Herbert Adrian Peppler (1910-1983) was a son of Herbert George Peppler and Florence Lucinda Duffy daughter of Jerome Duffy.

In 2003, I spent a couple of interesting hours at the Woodstock, Ontario headquarters of the Oxford County Genealogical Society and visited nearby St. Peter's R.C. Cemetery, where many Duffys, including Jerome, are buried. While at the O.C.G.S. I looked at a copy of "A Registry of Baptisms and Marriages for Beachville, Woodstock, East Oxford, Windham, Norwich and Blenheim 1850-1853" and found two entries which refer to Patrick Duffy and Armina Collins.

The first entry in the Registry is a record of the marriage of "Patrick Duffy to Armina Collins (Protestant)," on August 16, 1851, in a ceremony conducted by a Father Monaghan witnessed by James Duffy and Mary Kelly. A James Duffy is buried with his wife Mary Kelly in St. Peter's Cemetery.

The second entry is a record of the baptism of a boy of three-months, "Gerom", child of Patrick Duffy and "Maria" Collins, officiated by an apparently semi-literate or at least hard-of-hearing Father Carayon on March 7, 1853. The sponsors? are recorded as "Ossum(?) Duffy" and "Alice Garvy." I believe that "Gerom" died in infancy or sometime before my great-grandfather Jerome was born in 1858. Clearly, Jerome was a name much favoured by the parents.

The O.C.G.S. also has a copy of a six-page undated typescript on the Duffy family of North Norwhich Township compiled by Mrs. Jacqueline E. Wilson. This document states that Patrick Duffy and Margaret McNally had four children: Sara (b. 1821; m. Edward O'Connor); James (b. 1823), Patrick (b. 1826?) and Francis (b.1832). Unfortunately, the focus is on Francis Duffy (Mrs. Wilson's line) and makes only passing reference to the other siblings. I also have some doubts as to the accuracy of the document (eg. Patrick's birth date), but some of her information can be corroborated. Patrick Duffy (d. 1839) is buried in St. Peter's Cemetery with his wife Margaret McNally (d. 1848). She is probably one of the McNally's of county Monaghan who were the first Irish to settle in the area and who donated the land on which St. Peter's was built. James Duffy, Patrick Duffy and Edward O'Connor (Sara) all lived in close proximity in Dereham and North Norwich Townships. According to the Wilson typescript, Francis Duffy and family moved from Oxford County to Brooke Township in Lambton County in 1859.

I have a copy of the Wilson typescript and a transcription of the Registry of Baptisms, etc. which was produced by the Norfolk County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1992.

I am continuing to search for Armina's burial place and expect to find it in one of the cemeteries in or around Brantford, Ontario .

Could Ellen Duffy be an older sister of your Patrick? She was born abt 1814 in Ireland but didn't marry until age 45. Residence is in Norwich Twp. in Oxford in 1859. You can not be positive she is a sibling (could be cousin or could be no relation) but you can put parents names on the back burner as you look for collaborating information to see if they are parents of your Patrick.

The graphic to the left was taken from a Mt. Elgin Cemetery database...copied, I'm sure, as listed. This should put to rest the Duffie family tradition that stated that Harriet Allen Duffy was buried as "Duffie" next to James Munroe Duffy.

I am not certain of the birth dates given for Seth and Margaret. I took the information from some data received several years ago, but recent discoveries bring that to question. The 1901 Canada Census shows "Seth Allen" in Norfolk (Noth/Nord) District, Sub District Dereham. All of that is appropriate, since that was where the Duffy and Allen families met. However, the index page for that census states that he was born in Novia Scotia and immigrated to Canada in 1846.

The lady who sent me this data originally perceived that the census indicated the U.S. for his birth. I can see how whomever indexed this for the Mormons would perceieve it as "N.S.", or Nova Scotia.

At this point, I'm reasonably sure the data I've posted is accurate since many other pieces fall into place. The listing as "Baptists" rings true since Harriet listed her denomination as "Baptist" on the marriage certificate, and we know it was "Seth & Margaret" based on the marriage announcement posted elsewhere on this page.

Also, I've seen some pretty atrocious handwriting in the various census records I've browsed, so what we see here could be interpreted any number of ways.

Also in the household is Lucy McLue, indexed as Seth's mother. However, the following Death Certificate for Margaret Jacob Allen indicates that her mother was "Lucy Weston Jacob". She was apparently widowed and remarried a "McLue". So she was Seth's mother-in-law.

    Patrick Duffy Death Certificate

This lists Patrick as a Methodist. Prior to this, all documentation stated Catholic. Perhaps he converted at some point, or it may have been wishful thinking on the part of Armenia, who was a Methodist.

    (1901)

Note: birthday 11Oct1832...this is Patrick Duffy's wife. Brant District hasn't come up before. Contrary to what it states on this census, she was born in the U.S., as stated on her Death Certificate.

Officially, with the exception of "Hattie Duffy', all these names are listed erroneously. All the children were officially "Duffie". This also explains why so many of my early genealogical searches for the family proved fruitless. Remember...the 1880 census had Blake's entire family listed as "Duffey".

Blake and Ethel Duffie, Ingersol Census, 1901. They were not listed in the 1891 census.

Believe this could be Harriet Allen's father & mother - you may get a clue back another generation too - since his mother, age 88, is in the household. Check out the actual census page & note that Seth is born USA & came to Canada 1846. (When the Mormons indexed this page, they showed his birthplace as "Novia Scotia"....see above.)

Blake Munroe Duffy married in 1902, in Ingersoll, Ontario to Lucinda Campbell. Lucinda died in 1909.

Blake Munroe Duffy married Lucinda Campbell as Blake Munroe Duffey in 1902....even though the 1901 census listed him as Blake Duffy. He is the oldest of the six children of Harriet Allen Duffy. Each child was listed as "Duffie", rather than the correct "Duffy" on their birth certificate. While we're not sure why she did it, we were told that it was a "Catholic/Protestant" issue. She was a Protestant, GGrandfather (James) Munroe Duffy was a Catholic.

Obviously the children were uncertain of the spelling because Grandfather Duffy/Duffie spelled his name differently at different times. Or perhaps I should say, his name was spelled differently probably on an assumption by someone recording his name at different times and places. He probably didn't even pay attention to the spelling. That could drive genealogists nuts!

MARRIED AT DURAND, MICHIGAN--The following from the Durand Michigan Express, of Thursday, May 14, refers to the marriage of Miss Rose Duffy, of Mt. Elgin, Ontario, took place well known in Ingersoll. On last Tuesday morning at 7 o'clock the wedding of Mr. Lawrence Cosgrove of Chicago, and Miss Rose Duffy, of Mt. Elgin, Ontario, took place at St. Mary's Church in Durand. The Rev. James Ronayne, of Conners Creek, Michigan, a life long friend of the bride's family, was present by special invitation to perform the ceremony. Immediately following the marriage, Father Ronayne sang the nuptial High Mass of the Catholic Liturgy and read the special blessings of the church over the newly married couple. In conclusion Father Ronayne spoke very earnestly of the dignity and importance of the marriage state and the rich blessings showered upon those faithful ones who honour this condition of life by the performance of all religious duties inseparable from the state of lawful wedlock. The sanctuary was very tastily adorned with a profusion of ferns, palms, Easter lilies and white carnations and presented an attractive appearance owing to the simplicity of colour and at the same time richness in the decorations. Following the ceremony at St. Mary's an elaborate wedding breakfast was served at the home of Mrs. Denis Murphy, a sister of the bride, at which were present Fathers Ronayne and Haynes and those relatives who reached town for the occasion. A pleasing incident of the morning was a telegram of congratulations from the good people of Mount Elgin, who in a body gave evidence of their esteem for Mrs. Cosgrove by reminding herself and husband that though far away they were not forgetful of the happy day. Mr. and Mrs. Cosgrove left on the afternoon fast train for Chicago, which they will make their place of residence. May years of happiness attend them

DEATH OF A DEREHAM PIONEER--John Duffy, a Dereham [township] pioneer, died suddenly at Durand, Michigan, on Saturday morning from paralysis. He had been spending the winter with his daughters, who reside in Michigan, one of them at Durand--and was on his way home when stricken. The first intimation which relatives here received of his illness was contained in a telegram stating that he was dying. This message was quickly followed by another announcing his death. The late John Duffy was born in Ireland, 74 years ago. When 3 years of age, he came to Canada with his parents, since which time he had resided in Dereham [township]. He was a blacksmith by trade, but for the past 30 years had been successfully engaged in farming. He was industrious and generous and enjoyed the esteem of a wide circle of friends, who will learn with keen regret of his demise. He is survived by four sons and four daughters. The remains arrived this morning on the 11:52 GTR train and the funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock from his late residence, Lot 6, Concession 4, Dereham [township], and proceed to the Roman Catholic Church, Norwich thence to the Roman Catholic Cemetery.

I went thru Mom's box of goodies she has at Sunrise. In there is Dad's birth certificate, Grandma and Grandpa Duffie marriage license and naturalization papers. They were married on Dec. 24. 1910. Doesn't that coincide with the boarding house census? Our dad gave the info for his dad's death certificate. To show how errors are so easy, he listed Blake Duffie's mother as Harriet Allen and his dad as Allen Duffie. Grandpa Blake spelled his last name when he signed the guest register at Mom and Dad's wedding as Duffie. He spells his middle Munroe. Not too much else of interest in the box.

After hours of eye-crossing scrolling of all indexed cemeteries in Oxford County, these are all the "Duffy" and "Duffy Related" listings I could find. Seeing "Lucinda Duffy" there lends credibility to the fact that this was the homestead for our Duffy clan. What isn't shown here is the fact there is no headstone for Grandpa Duffie's first wife...Lucinda.

Noticeably missing are Patrick and Armenia...altho Jerome Duffy is buried there. Jerome is the second son, born after our GGrandfather James Munroe Duffy

Harriet Allen Duffie was buried in Mt. Elgin Cemetery, and we will probably find James Munro Duffy there also. That is where we want to visit to see if she is REALLY buried with "Duffie" on her tombstone. We may also find that Mt. Elgin Cemetery was the family burial location at that time...and Patrick and Armenia may be there.
