My Connection To David B. & Catherine Law Trine

In 1832, David B. Trine's parents, Jacob & Catherine Bobenmoyer Trine, moved their family from Berks County, Pennsylvania, to Butler County, Ohio. Jacob Trine was the brother of Peter Trine, Sr, my 4th. GGrandfather. My 2nd. GGrandmother was Rebecca May Catharine Trine Lesher. Jacob & Catherine Bobenmoyer Trine were her Grand Aunt & Uncle.

My mother is a Lesher. Some of those who followed the link from the Preble County Genealogy Web Site to this site may remember Daniel Lesher, coach and teacher at West Alexandria High School, West Alexandria, Preble County, Ohio, in the '50s and '60s.

David B. Trine, Trenton, Butler County, Ohio, was a 1st. Cousin 5X Removed to my generation of Lesher/Jenny/Duffie cousins.

There was another David Trine enlisted in the Union Army from Ohio. Calculating his birthdate from the data showed a birthdate of 1833. This listing gives a birth date of 1840...accurate for our David B. Trine.

The other David Trine was probably David B. Trine, b 10 MAR 1832, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. He was the brother of Rebecca May Catharine Trine Lesher, GGGrandmother to my generation of Lesher/Jenny/Duffie, making him our 2nd Great Grand Uncle.

He was married to Rebecca Kitch, b 18 Jun 1836, in Greenville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Rebecca was of the Kitch family we found in Otter Creek Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, with the Leshers, Willimans, and others of our family tree.

  • David Kitch died in Kinsman, Trumbull County, Ohio, on 27 Sep 1904.
  • Rebecca died 17 Aug 1909, also in Kinsman, Trumbull County, Ohio.

These two Civil War Veterans were 1st. Cousins 1X Removed.

Mary E. Trine
1872-1886

The information I had for Mary gave her birth as 1879. However, the headstone clearly states 1872.

Laura Trine
1882-1886

David B . Trine, Jr.
1885-1886

Catherine lost her husband, David B. Trine, in 1885, and five of her children in 1886: Cholera Infantum - Summer complaint. A disease of infants; indigenous to the United States; prevalent during hot weather in most of the towns of the middle and southern, and many of the western States; ordinarily characterized by excessive irritability of stomach, with purging, the stools being thin and colorless, or of various hues ofgreen and pink, but never yellow, except at the onset or during convalescences; fever of an obscurely remittent character; rapid emaciation; cold feet and hands, with preternatural heat of head and abdomen; dry, harsh and wilted skin; excessive thirst; and in the latter stages somnolency, the patient sleeping with his eyes half open; coma; the case terminating often with convulsions. [Hoblyn1855]

A disease that occurs, generally, in the Middle States of the Union, in June or July, and continues during hot weather; hence called the 'summer complaint'. The chief symptoms are vomiting, purging of green or yellow matter, slime, or blood, attended with pain or uneasiness, and swelling of the abdomen, with some pyrexia, generally. Differs little from what is vulgarly called the Watery Gripes in England. [Dunglison1874].

A dangerous summer disease, of infants, caused by hot weather, bad air, or poor milk, and especially fatal in large cities. [Webster].

Often fatal form of gastroenteritis occurring in children; not true cholera but having similar symptoms. [Wordnet]

Erysipelas - Contagious skin disease from streptococci with vesicular and bulbous lesions.

An eruptive fever, called by the Romans Ignis sacer; popularly , the Rose, from the color of the skin; and St. Anthony's fire, from the burning heat, or because St. Anthony was supposed to cure it miraculously. [Hoblyn1855]

Redness or inflammation of some part of the skin, with fever, inflammatory or typhoid, and, generally, vesecations on the affected part, and symptomatic fever. It is also called St. Anthony's Fire, Ignis Sacer ("Sacred Fire"), the Rose and other names. [Thomas1875]

St. Anthony's fire; a febrile disease accompanied with a diffused inflammation of the skin, which, starting usually from a single point, spreads gradually over its surface. It is usually regarded as contagious, and often occurs epidemically. [Webster1913]

An acute disease of the skin and subcutaneous tissue caused by a species of hemolytic streptococcus and marked by localized inflammation and fever. Also called Saint Anthony's fire. [Heritage].

It also says that all the kids except Laura were born in Madison Twp., Butler Co., Ohio. Laura was born in Poash? Town (Poastown), Butler Co., Ohio.

Anna Trine
1889-1909

Anna Trine was born in 1889, and we know that David B. Trine died in 1885. This begs the question, who was Anna Trine's father? This graphic from the 1900 census clearly shows that Catherine Trine listed Anna as a "daughter".

David B. Trine

I believe this is the original stone for David Trine. At the base of the stone is the "Father" stone pictured above...which brings up the question: who put up the new "TRINE" head stone?

Behind and to the right is what I assume to be the original head stone for David B. Trine. With the exception of Catherine's (right of the large head stone), all the others pictured are to the left of David's.

Christiann Hinds Law
1809-1868

Mother of Catherine J Law Trine. From the information given, I calculated her birth date as 13 Dec 1809.

The presence of two head stones, one old...one new, again brings up the question who put up the new markers?

Elk Creek Baptist Church

Copied from: Earliest Church In Butler County

Here existed in the first year of the century a Baptist Church, originally a little west of the town, but afterwards moved in. This was the earliest Church organization in the county, and it is still in existence. Here in this village lived the Rev. Stephen GARD and Dr. Squier LITTELL, the first resident minister and doctor of the county. Trenton, indeed, is an older settlement than any other in our limits, except Hamilton, Rossville, and Middletown. The Rev. Mr. GARD organized the present Church at Trenton in 1800, and was its pastor at his death, August 14, 1839...He organized nearly all the Baptist Churches within the Miami Valley -- Trenton, Middletown, Franklin, Hamilton, and the First Church of Dayton, and some others. He was born November 3, 1776, in Essex County, New Jersey. He received his education in a common school, except a few months in a private classical school in his native county. He was married to Rachel PEARCE in 1801. He emigrated to Ohio about the end of the last century, making a temporary stay at Columbia, and moving to Trenton the same year. He came to Ohio in company with his father-in-law and family, Dr. LITTELL accompanying them.

Founder's Park
Trenton, Butler County, Ohio

Copied from: The Elk Creek Baptist Church & Cemetery

Elder Stephen Gard, Michael Pearce's son-in-law, organized Trenton's first church, Elk Creek Baptist, in 1802. It was the earliest church organized in Butler County. Deacon Michael Pearce, founder of Trenton, donated ground for both the church and cemetery. The first burial was that of Phebe Gard, Stephen Gard's sister, in 1804. Both Michael Pearce and his wife Phebe Pearce are buried there. Elder Gard was the pastor for 39 years and went on to found many of the Baptist churches in the Miami Valley. The cemetery is now called the Pioneer Cemetery and is no longer used for burials. In the beginning, a log building served the small congregation. By 1820, the log building was replaced with a brick structure, which was forty feet wide and sixty feet long and accommodated 250 people. The congregation disbanded circa 1900. In 1924, the building was demolished.

I took the following from the internet:

Using a date calculator, I determined her birth to be 22 Nov 1862

Good

I'm not sure which Good since the inscription was in the shade and well worn. The white slab lying on the ground to the right is the "Sarah Ellen Trine" headstone pictured above. I thought about setting it upright, but decided it was best left alone.

Lydia Trine is Lydia Good Trine, so Sarah was apparently buried in her mother's family plot. There are no other Trine graves in this cemetery that I could find.

Frank J. Law

John F. & Sarah A. Trine Law

Hurricane Ike

For those who don't know, since my first visit to Miltonville Cemetery, the remnants of Hurricane Ike came through Ohio this past Sunday afternoon. This was the first time in history Ohio suffered from a hurricane. The Cincinnati metropolitan area had/has about 700,000 homes without electricity.

The following pictures are from the cemetery, and the two downed trees are each within about 15 feet of the John B. & Sarah A. Trine Law stone pictured above.

More Hurricane Ike

This tree is about 10 feet to the right of the John & Sarah Law stone, and it did some major damage to the stones near it. There are several large stones knocked off their pedastals and buried under the limbs of the tree.

Looking Back At The
John & Sarah Trine Law Stone

This is looking back past trunk of the tree picture above to the John & Sarah Law stone. The Law stone is under the branches of the tree just across the road.

Past The Law Stone

This is from behind the John & Sarah Law stone with the two downed trees pictured above. The Law stone is the tallest one, close to the road. It appears the tree next to the stone did lose some branches, and the ground is littered with limbs. However, fortunately it did not come down.

David B. Trine

Having been advised that the marker at David Trine's grave was probably his Civil War Veteran marker, I went back to see if I could get a better picture of it. It is pretty badly worn, since it sits pretty much out in the wind, but it does have the shield. The bottom picture shows the dates a little better than the other picture I took.

Seven Mile, Ohio

I made the short trip from Trenton to Seven Mile hoping to find some remnant of the Trine/Bobenmoyer family's life there. I wasn't sure if any of our ancestors are buried there, but I thought I could wander any old cemetery I found. When I asked about the location of the oldest cemetery in town, the owner of the local "Carry Out" kinda chuckled and said, "Under the fire department."

Apparently nobody knew there was a cemetery there, and it got dug up when they built the fire house.

He did have a book about Seven Mile History, and in the index there was a reference to Bobbenmyer. He told me I could buy the book at the local antique store...which was closed.

The top picture states that Seven Mile was established in 1845. We know from Kati's postings that Jacob & Catherine Bobenmoyer Trine left Berks County, PA, in 1832. I don't know exactly when they settled in Seven Mile, but Sarah A. Trine (Law) was born in Seven Mile on 14 Feb 1836. It looks like they could very well have been a "founding family" there.

Stay tuned for more developments.
