I visited the former home of Simon & Susan Trine Goldman in Middletown, Ohio, on October 7, 2008. Susan Trine Goldman was the daughter of Jacob & Catherine Bobenmeyer Trine. Her parents had moved from Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 1832. Susan was born in Trenton, Butler County, Ohio, in 1835. Simon & Susan married on 10 September 1857.

The home is currently occupied by Nancy Romero, and we had a pleasant visit. She allowed me inside where I took these pictures.

It was obvious from our conversation that Ms. Romero appreciates the history of her home. She knew quite a bit about Simon & Susan Goldman, much of which I will share with you along with these pictures.

Thanks, Ms. Romero, for your hospitality.

Ms. Romero stated that the hand carving mentioned in the graphic above was done by a deaf-mute son of Simon & Susan. His condition was the result of scarlet fever as a child. She wasn't sure which, but the only son for whom I have no marital data was Joseph.

He was sent to the east where he learned the carving trade. Good Grief! I can't even carve the Thanksgiving turkey!

She also clarified something about which I had been curious for quite some time. We learned that Simon Goldman developed his business by travelling from Cincinnati to Middletown for several years working as a peddler. It's forty miles from Cincinnati to Middletown...at a time when you were lucky to get in 20 miles a day!

So how did Simon get from Cincinnati to Middletown to peddle his wares?

A boat...on the Erie Canal...which ran from Cincinnati through Middletown.
